Okay, so this is all you need.

  • A foam board/illustration board. I just grabbed one for a few bucks at Blick.

  • DAP Patch N Paint. I chose this spackling because it’s super lightweight. It’s also a bright white

  • A putty/palette knife.

  • Misc. things such as a trash bag to cover the ground, scissors to cut the trash bag, and I used the back of a paint brush to mix up my spackling.

And here’s how I did it. It’s seriously so easy! I took my putty knife and picked up a bunch of spackling and spread it on my board until the whole thing was covered. Then I used to knife to scrape off the excess and create the shapes and textures I wanted. It helped to do this with a window open to the side because my spackling cast shadows which helped me decide which parts had too much and I removed some there.

After I decided I was happy with how the board looked, I just left it to dry (which is a process that only takes 30 minutes). The board did buckle so I covered the top of it with a big sheet of paper and set some heavy books on top. That seemed to do the trick.

And here it is. So easy! It cost me less than $20, and I had plenty of spackling to spare to use on my walls at home. It’s super lightweight, and if you wanted to go over it with paint to match your brand colors, it’s an easy way to get the perfect flat lay background. Score!
